Matthew 5:10-12

Suffering

Matthew 5:10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:11 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

Matthew 5:12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Kinds of Persecution

“Persecute” -

Matthew 5:11 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

“Insult” -

The Joy of Persecution

1. We   Reign   .

“…for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

 

Living on one of three levels:

      The Satanic level is to “return                                           evil for evil.”

      The human level is to “return    good for good.

      The divine level is to “return      good for evil.”

2. We “Real McCoy   .”

Acts 5:41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.

Philip. 3:10 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,

3. We   Reflect   .

Suffering has a purifying   effect on our hearts.

1 Peter 4:1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin.

      Suffering has a purifying   effect on our hearts.

1 Peter 4:2 As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.

      Suffering hones our real priorities .

      Suffering   drives  us to God.

Psalm 119:67, 71 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word. It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.

4. We   Rejoice   .

     Reward .

Matthew 5:12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

2 Cor. 4:17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

     Anticipation .

2 Cor. 4:18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

2 Tim. 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

2 Tim. 4:8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day--and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
